EIR Event Sudbury a Resounding Success

The Engineer-in-Residence (EIR) Program held its first Community Event in Sudbury on November 30, 2006 at Laurentian University. Peter Liu-Ernsting of Hatch Engineering and a member of the executive of PEO's Sudbury Chapter hosted the event that drew some 30 attendees from the engineering, education and science outreach communities. The evening opened with keynote Ken McFarlane of the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO) giving a fascinating presentation on the engineering challenges of creating SNO. He was followed by EIR Project Leader Jeffrey Crelinsten with an overview of the EIR Program. Two Engineer/Teacher teams from the Ottawa area currently in the program discussed their experiences. First up, from Goulbourn Middle School, were teacher Paula Walker and her Engineer-in-Residence Nabil Alexan, a Product Integrity Specialist at Flextronics Design Service. Teacher Susan Dubois from First Avenue Public School and EIR Gordon Griffith, Manager, Qualifications, Canadian Council of Professional Engineers rounded out the presentations.
