Arctic surveillance in Canada's changing North

Defence R & D Canada and Dalhousie University's Centre for Foreign Policy Studies sponsored The First Northern Watch Conference on October 21 to 23 to understand the requirements needed for Arctic surveillance. Interest in the area is increasing because of predictions that climate change will create more open water by 2040, opening up new transport routes and opportunities for natural resource mining. EIR Klaus Kollenberg, Ottawa based project director from Defence R & D Canada states : "You can appreciate the Arctic is very remote. It's a harsh environment and it's very difficult to set up permanent installations, so to better understand the traffic that's going through the Arctic by sea, air or land, we want to understand what surveillance we need." More details of the First Northern Watch Conference found in the Calgary Herald.
