CN Tower Topped by Burj Dubai

On September 14, 2007, Burj Dubai, a business/hotel/residential building going up in the United Arab Emirates soared 555 meters into the sky and became the world's tallest freestanding structure, outstripping Toronto's CN Tower. The CN Tower, which measures 553 meters held the record for over 30 years. The final height of Burj Dubai is a closely guarded secret, but is rumoured to be over 800 meters. Earlier this year, Burj Dubai beat Taipei 101, which at 508 metres had been holding the tallest-building title since it opened in 2004. The CN Tower may still have something to brag about. The Burj Dubai website boasts that its 124th-floor observatory, 442 metres up, will be "the highest publicly accessible observation deck in the world." This is not entirely true as the CN Tower's Sky Pod is 447 metres above ground.
